Leather is a highly desirable material that can be used to make a whole range of different products (if you have the knowledge). Over the past several months I’ve repeatedly come across companies manufacturing leather products in the USA, so I thought it’d be a good idea to start a page to share them as I find them.
North Star Leather
North Star Leather was established in 1969 by Stephen M. Batson, and was originally based in Boston, before relocating to Ruby, South Carolina. The company offers a diverse product line, including wallets, belts, handbags, and checkbook covers, all made from high-quality leather. They utilize premium materials such as Horween Leather and S.B. Foot Leather, renowned for their durability and rich texture.
Holtz Leather
Holtz Leather is a company that was started in 2014 by a family that was on the verge of losing everything. Today it’s a thriving business with multiple retail stores. All Holtz Leather products are made in Huntsville, Alabama with Full-Grain American Leather.
The Buffalo Billfold Company
The Buffalo Billfold Company has been operating since 1972 and is based in Worthington, Minnesota. They specialize in handcrafted leather goods made from American bison leather and they make wallets, billfolds, purses, bags, handbags, belts, briefcases, journals, padfolios, cases, clips, pouches, and more. The company developed its own unique custom-tanned leather that’s tough, rugged and built to last.
Rogue Industries
Rogue Industries is based in Standish, Maine, and is a family-owned leather goods company that crafts wallets and accessories. Founder, Michael Lyons, was unhappy with his bulky back pocket wallet, which he was convinced was causing his lower back pain. He created a front pocket wallet design that was shaped to fit the cut of your front pants pocket. And that’s how Rogue Industries was born. Please be aware that not all of the wallets that they sell are made in the USA, so read descriptions carefully.
Main Street Forge
Main Street Forge partners with small local craftsman, artisans & makers that take the time to make small batches of high-quality products that will last a lifetime. All products are made right here in the USA! Their product lineup includes belts, wallets, and everyday carry items, all made from full-grain leather.
Colonel Littleton
Colonel Littleton specializes in handcrafted leather goods and accessories, and operates from their workshop in Lynnville, Tennessee. The company produces a diverse range of products, including bags, belts, wallets, and home accessories, and has been operating since 1987.
Frank Clegg
Frank Clegg Leatherworks is a family-owned company that was established in 1970 and is based in Fall River, Massachusetts. The company specializes in handcrafted leather goods and operates from a restored mill, where Frank, along with his sons Andrew and Ian, and a team of skilled artisans, meticulously craft each piece in-house. Their product lineup includes briefcases, duffle bags, and tote bags, all made from carbon-neutral, vegetable-tanned leather.
KMM & Co.
KMM & Co. is an Atlanta-based company specializing in handcrafted leather goods and has been running since 2011. They produce a range of products, including tote bags, handbags, wallets, and accessories. The brand has become synonymous with doing things the old-fashioned way. Every rivet on a leather tote bag is set by hand. Monograms are stamped letter by letter. Wallets are meticulously hand-stitched. And every detail, from the grain of the leather to the color of the thread to the angle of the bevel on a strap, is carefully considered.
Korchmar
Korchmar has been in the business of handcrafting fine leather goods for over 100 years. Today the company is a fourth-generation, family-owned manufacturer that operates its own factories in Naples, Florida, and the Dominican Republic. Their product lineup includes briefcases, travel bags, and accessories. As they have an overseas factory, you need to read descriptions carefully, but they do have a ‘Made in USA’ section on the site, which I have linked to below.
Brynn Capella
Founded in 2009 by self-taught designer Brynn Capella, the company specializes in handcrafted leather handbags and accessories that blend coastal cool with city chic. Their production studio is located on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, and all products are made in small batches, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and quality. Please note that the company sources leathers from Italy, South America and the USA from companies based in the United States.
Ashland Leather
Ashland Leather was founded in 2011 by two long-time tannery workers and is a Chicago-based company specializing in handcrafted leather wallets and accessories. They craft each piece by hand using exclusively Horween® Leather, renowned for its durability and rich patina. Their goal is to make you a wallet that will last forever, in terms of construction, quality and style. If your wallet ever rips or if the stitching comes undone (it won’t), they will fix it or replace it for free, forever.
Footskins
Since 1975, Footskins has been making handcrafted moccasin-style footwear in Spring Grove, Minnesota. They produce a range of products, including moccasins, slippers, shoes, and boots for men, women, and children. The company uses American leathers to make their footwear.
Reed
Reed was established in 1950 by Emil and Etta Reed, along with Etta’s brother Saul Silver and his wife Roseann. The company has been a cornerstone of Detroit’s leather apparel industry for over seven decade, specializing in crafting high-quality leather jackets, coats, and accessories for both men and women. Please note that they offer both USA-made and imported products, but do have a “Made in USA” section on their website.
Amish Leather Works
Amish Leather Works is based in southern Indiana and makes handcrafted leather goods that blend traditional Amish craftsmanship with modern functionality. Their product range includes belts, bags, straps, suspendersand work gear, all made from full-grain leather.
Leather Works Minnesota
Leather Works Minnesota began as a garage-based venture in 1999 near St. Paul, Minnesota with a mission to revive American-made craftsmanship. Every single one of their items is handmade and inspected at each step in the process. From cutting and imprinting, to piecing, sewing, and burnishing, their team of skilled leatherworkers to creates leather goods that will last a lifetime. The company carefully selects only the finest materials for its products. They source their leather from heritage tanneries like S.B. Foot (1872), Tennessee Tanning Company (1946), and Weaver Leather (1973). They use nylon thread that provides a durability matching that of the leather.
BluShark Straps
BluShark Straps was founded in 2015 and offers premium watch straps and belts make by skilled leatherworkers in the southeastern U.S. The leather is full grain from the Horween Leather Company in Chicago where they have been honing their process since 1905. It’s the gold standard in the industry.
Brullen Company
Brullen Company is a California-based artisan workshop specializing in handcrafted leather goods. They produce a range of products, including belts, wallets, and accessories.
Wolverine
Wolverine is a renowned American boot manufacturer that was founded back in 1883 and is known for its rugged, durable footwear, having introduced its iconic 1000 Mile Boot in 1914. They still manufacture the 1000 Mile Boot in the USA today in Big Rapids, Michigan. They are made using US and globally sourced materials.
Howl + Hide
Howl + Hide was created in 2015 and started with a man and a cut up leather jacket from Goodwill. Fast forward years of blood, sweat and tears (quite literally) and they have established who they are today: a quality leather goods brand who exists to bring you joy and promote equity in its community. The company operates from its flagship store and production facility in Indianapolis, where a team of skilled artisans creates a range of products, including bags, wallets, and accessories.
Sonoma County Leather
Sonoma County Leather is a California-based company specializing in handcrafted leather goods that embody the spirit of Wine Country. Their product range includes handbags, wine carriers, and travel bags, all meticulously crafted to inspire thoughts of adventure and enduring quality.
olpr. Leather Goods Co.
Leather Goods Co. began as a hobby focused on creating high-quality leather accessories. Recognizing a demand for artisanal leather products, the founder, along with his brother-in-law, expanded the venture. Initially based in Ukraine, to better serve their growing U.S. customer base the founders relocated to Mooresville, North Carolina in 2015. Today they make handcrafted items such as wallets, aprons, and watch bands, sourcing leather from renowned tanneries like Horween, and offers customization options to cater to individual preferences.
Oak Street Bootmakers
Oak Street Bootmakers was established to preserve traditional American shoemaking. The company handcrafts its boots and shoes using high-quality materials like Horween Chromexcel leather. Their manufacturing takes place in the U.S., and every pair is made with a commitment to longevity, featuring Goodyear welt construction for recrafting. Today they are more committed to domestic manufacturing than ever before—not in spite of the challenges, but because of them. For them, ‘Made in USA’ is not a selling point—it’s the whole point.
