Journals and Notebooks Made in the USA (8+ Options)

There’s something special about putting pen to paper that digital notes just can’t replace (I’ve tried going paperless many times, but always come back to my journals). I spent some time researching American companies that still manufacture these them domestically and compiled all my findings in the list below.

​Decomposition is a brand under Michael Roger, Inc. and was founded in 1949 by the great-grandfather of the current owner. The company is located in Brooklyn, New York and makes unique journals, notebooks, and sketchbooks from 100% post-consumer-waste recycled paper, soy ink, and bio-gas production methods.

​Field Notes was founded in 2007 as a collaboration between Aaron Draplin and Jim Coudal, and draws inspiration from vintage agricultural memo books. They manufacture all products in the USA using paper from Midwest mills and their flagship product is the Original Kraft Memo Book, a 48-page notebook available with graph, ruled, or plain pages bound with a three-staple saddle-stitch. They’re also known for limited-edition releases exploring unique colors, papers, and printing techniques that often reflect themes of American culture and history.

​​Northbooks creates sustainable, high-quality notebooks and journals using recycled paper and eco-friendly materials. All their products are designed, sourced, and manufactured in the USA. ​Rite in the Rain has been operating since 1916 and manufactures all-weather writing products designed to withstand harsh conditions in Tacoma, Washington. They offer a wide range of notebooks in different sizes that feature weatherproof paper that repels water, sweat, and mud. Be aware that while their notebooks are USA-made, many of their pens and pencils are made overseas.

​Appointed is a woman-owned brand founded in 2015 by Suann Song that creates thoughtfully designed paper goods and desktop products. They were initially based in Washington, D.C., but relocated manufacturing to New York State in February 2025 to expand production. Their American-made products use responsibly sourced materials, including paper produced with two-thirds renewable energy that’s acid and chlorine-free.

Write Notepads & Co. was founded in 2012 by third-generation bookbinder Chris Rothe, and produces high-quality, American-made notebooks. All their products are meticulously designed, printed, and assembled by hand in their Baltimore facility.

Filson

​Filson was founded in 1897 by Clinton C. Filson in Seattle, Washington, Filson (officially C.C. Filson Co.) originally outfitted prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush with durable outdoor gear. While they are still renowned for their rugged apparel and accessories, they also offer a USA-made notebook that features a protective cover and durable paper designed for field use and outdoor conditions.

Scout Books was founded in 2009 and creates customizable, pocket-sized notebooks in Portland, Oregon. Drawing on their publishing and design background, founders Austin and Laura Whipple developed a sustainable product combining utility with simplicity. All production—from design to packaging—occurs in-house at their Southeast Portland headquarters using 100% recycled paper, vegetable-based inks, and renewable energy-powered equipment.
