Facing financial struggles and a shrinking market in the early 2000s, Ric Cabot, Marc’s son, took a bold step in 2004 to revitalize the business by launching the Darn Tough brand. In an audacious marketing move, Ric gave away 3,500 pairs of merino wool socks at the Vermont City Marathon.
This event significantly boosted the brand’s reputation, highlighting their socks’ durability and lifetime guarantee. The risk Ric took paid off big, and the company saw its distribution expand nationwide with sales increasing dramatically in the following years.

The company has remained family-owned and operated, spanning three generations. It is now one of the largest employers in Northfield, Vermont, refusing to outsource production and maintaining its commitment to crafting the socks in Vermont.
